Think a 70-Something Can’t Possibly Be President? Think Again.

It was just a small moment, three hours into the Oscars broadcast.  It was 1970.  America was in the midst of Vietnam war protests and race riots.  There were too many things to think about to think about him.  I mean what was he anyway?  A dancer.  An old hoofer.  He never made real art like the auteur directors and naturalistic actors like Coppolla and Nicholson, now all the rage in Hollywood.  You can tell how important they thought he was because his category was foreign documentary or something. What makes it all the more remarkable is how he pulls it off after such a clumsy humorless intro by Bob Hope.  So for those of you who think a 77 year old can’t conceivably be president and function at a high-level…
